ISIS’ genocidal violence has forced almost 90% of the Yazidi population to flee their historic homeland in Iraq. Today, many Yazidi villages have been liberated, but a lack of essential services has made it impossible for families to return home. AMAR is working to rebuild vital infrastructure so that Yazidis can restart their lives and begin to think about a brighter future.

For more than two years, Iraq’s Yazidi community has been the victim of ISIS’ genocidal violence. Thousands have been killed, kidnapped, raped and tortured, and hundreds of thousands more have been forced from their homeland.

350,000 men, women and children from this ancient religious minority – almost 90% of the entire Yazidi population in Iraq – are now living as refugees in their own country. Home is now a tent or hut, where they must spend stifling summers and freezing winters under canvas with just the most basic facilities.

There is little or no work for these internally displaced people, leaving many of them facing a daily battle to survive. But for all Yazidis, their biggest fear is that they will never be able to return to their old lives, to their villages, to their old homes.

Despite many Yazidi villages being liberated by Kurdish and Iraqi forces, families are understandably reluctant to return.

As they retreated, ISIS militants ransacked and pillaged, smashing or stealing vital equipment and reducing many buildings to rubble. Hospitals and schools are in a state of total disrepair. Water and electricity supplies are cut. Food is almost non-existent.

Without access to essential services, it remains impossible for families to return home and restart their lives.

AMAR teams are already on the ground, assisting an estimated 150,000 Yazidis living in displacement camps in the Kurdish region of Northern Iraq, and delivering classes to students who have returned to the Sinjar region. But more work needs to be done to ensure that Yazidis can restart their lives and begin to think about a brighter future. A safe, secure and prosperous future free from the horrors of war.

With the support of His Highness Prince Tahseen Saeed, the leader of the Yazidi Spiritual Council, AMAR will rebuild, refurbish and reopen healthcare and educational centres, and establish village halls and training centres in safe, liberated areas so that families can start returning home.

But we cannot do this without your support. Please help Yazidis to return home.
